POSTED: 11:04 pm CST November 15, 2008

(Sports Network) - Brandon Costner led three players in double figures with a team-best 19 points, guiding the NC State Wolfpack to a 65-59 win over the New Orleans Privateers in non-conference action at Lakefront Arena.

Costner finished the contest shooting 6-of-10 from the field and also cleared seven rebounds for the Wolfpack (1-0) in their season-opening victory. Ben McCauley came up big as well with 17 points, followed by Trevor Ferguson with 10 points off the bench.

The Privateers (0-1) were led by T.J. Worley and his 19-point effort, followed by Darrian McKinstry who scored 17 points, handed out six assists and tallied five steals. Destin Damachoua contributed 10 points in 32 minutes as well.

New Orleans led by as many as seven points in the first half, shooting an even 50 percent from the field, but the squad watched the visitors close out the period on a 4-0 run to lock the score at 31-31 at the break.

In the second half NC State turned up the offense with 60 percent accuracy from the floor and survived just 1-of-5 beyond the arc in the frame to claim the six-point triumph.

NC State, which finished the night a mere 5-of-17 out on the perimeter, made up for it by holding off UNO on the glass, 34-22.

The inside presence of Jeff Adrien and Hasheem Thabeet was took much for No. 25 West Virginia to handle, as the pair of Huskies combined for 30 points and 20 rebounds in fifth-ranked Connecticut's 61-55 victory in a classic Big East tussle. Adrien posted 17 points, while Thabeet logged 13 points and 13 rebounds for UConn (13-1, 2-1 Big East), which has bounced back with back-to-back conference victories after its lone loss to Georgetown last week. Stanley Robinson's 15 boards aided the Huskies' 52-33 edge on the glass, while Jerome Dyson and Kemba Walker chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. De'Sean Butler battled foul trouble for most of the contest but scored 13 points for West Virginia (11-3, 1-1), which fell to 5-1 at home and had its five-game winning streak stopped. Alex Ruoff was held to 4-of-16 shooting from the field for 13 points, while Darryl Bryant had 11 points in the loss.
