Oklahoma Fends Off Curry, Davidson

POSTED: 12:55 am CST November 19, 2008

(Sports Network) - Blake Griffin scored 25 points and raked in a career-high 21 rebounds, as 12th-ranked Oklahoma held off No. 21 Davidson, 82-78, in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, despite a career- high 44 points from Wildcats star Stephen Curry.

Curry, the son of former NBA star Dell Curry who burst onto the national scene in March with his incredible performance in leading Davidson to the Elite Eight, powered the Wildcats offense. He struggled at times from the field, and finished 12-of-29 overall, including 6-of-15 from beyond the arc, but he sank all 14 free throws he attempted.

"It is disappointing, coming into Oklahoma's house and trying to steal a win," said Curry. "I think we have to learn from this game, similar to last year. We had a tough loss early and hopefully we can come back like we did last year. We played hard all the way to the finish. We were down big and we made it a game, so I am proud of how we played."

He was outlasted by Griffin, though, who made 7-of-11 from the field and 11- of-12 at the charity stripe for the Sooners (3-0), who will UAB next Wednesday at Madison Square Garden in the semifinals of the tourney.

"That was a great college basketball game. I feel fortunate to sit here as the winning coach," said Oklahoma's Jeff Capel. "I'm really proud of our guys for digging in and finding a way. People got to witness two great performances; two special performances by two special players, what Blake and what Stephen did."

Willie Warren scored 20 points, and Taylor Griffin had 16 points and six boards for Oklahoma, which saw a 21-point second-half lead whittled to three in the final minute.

Andrew Lovedale scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Davidson (2-1), which opened the season in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since the 1969-70 season.

Blake Griffin scored 10 straight Oklahoma points during a 23-4 Sooners run early in the second half, as a two-point edge bulged to 61-40 after a Cade Davis three-pointer with 13:09 remaining.

The undersized Wildcats responded behind Curry, though, who sank three free throws and then drained a trey to kick off a 14-0 push. The Sooners made their free throws, though, and still held a 79-70 lead with less than two minutes remaining.

Brendan McKillop drained a three, though, and Curry nailed an incredible stepback trey in the corner with Griffin in his face, slicing the deficit to 79-76 with 53.6 seconds left. Davis and Curry traded free throws, then Davis missed the back end of a pair, giving the Wildcats a chance, down 82-78 with 15.3 seconds left, to cut to within one point.

Curry couldn't get a shot off, though, and turned the ball over, sealing the hard-fought win for the Sooners, who outrebounded the Wildcats 43-31.

The Sooners carved out a nine-point lead midway through the first half, but Davidson was able to trim the deficit to 38-34 by the end of the half, despite the fact that Curry spent the final 6:19 on the bench with three fouls.
