Morehead State Prevails In Double OT To Capture Ohio Valley Title

POSTED: 10:27 pm CST March 7, 2009

(Sports Network) - Freshman Steve Peterson made his only field goal in the game count, as his baseline jumper with 1.4 seconds left in the second overtime lifted Morehead State to a 67-65 victory over Austin Peay in a highly entertaining Ohio Valley Conference Tournament final.

Thanks to the dramatic win, fourth-seeded Morehead State (19-15) advanced to its first NCAA Tournament since 1984, the last time they won the OVC title.

Kenneth Faried recorded 13 of his 15 points after halftime, while also grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds for the Eagles, who received 13 points from Demonte Harper.

Wes Channels and Drake Reed each had 16 points for the second-seeded Governors (19-13), who fell in their bid for a second straight OVC championship.

The game was a far cry from Morehead State's two double-digit wins over Austin Peay in the regular season.

Brandon Shingles' layup on the Eagles' first possession of the second OT were the only points scored until Caleb Brown calmly sank two free throws with 28.0 ticks remaining to tie the game at 65-65.

After the Eagles called a timeout, the ball swung to Peterson in the left corner with time winding down. The freshman pumped to shake a defender, took one dribble and hit nothing but net from the baseline with 1.4 ticks showing.

Austin Peay's last ditch heave was nowhere near the net, and the Eagles' fans celebrated their first trip to the Big Dance in 25 years.

The first half ended with Austin Peay holding a 32-25 edge, and the margin moved to 42-31 thanks to six consecutive points from Austin Peay early in the second stanza.

Harper, though, hit three straight jumpers during an 11-2 spurt to pull MSU within 44-42 with just under 11 minutes to play in regulation. Two Faried free throws eventually tied things, 55-55, with 2:17 to play.

Both teams failed to convert offensively the next two times down. After killing the clock following a timeout with 34.1 seconds left, Shingles controlled the ball at the top of the key and lobbed a pass to Faried, who stuffed in an ferocious alley-oop over Ernest Fields with 6.7 ticks to go.

Having to drive the length of the court, Channels barreled into Faried in the lane and lost the ball, which Brown picked up, squared and banked in the tying bucket from 10 feet just as the buzzer sounded.

The first OT was played tight throughout. The score was knotted at 63-all, and Harper was whistled for a charge with 2.8 seconds remaining. Channels then had a nice look at the basket, but Faried flew out to the top of the key and blocked the potential winner to send it to another extra five minutes.
