NCAA Game Summary - Maryland At Minnesota

POSTED: 11:42 pm CDT March 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - Greivis Vasquez tallied 16 points to lead the fifth-seeded Maryland Terrapins to a 68-58 victory over the fourth-seeded Minnesota Golden Gophers in the first round of the NIT.

Bambale Osby racked up 14 points for Maryland (19-14), which will take on top- seeded Syracuse in the second round.

Damian Johnson managed 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for Minnesota (20-14), while Lawrence Westbrook, Blake Hoffarber and Jamal Abu-Shamala all contributed 11 points.

Maryland led 33-32 at intermission after trailing for much of the first half.

The Terps went on an 18-4 run that spanned from the end of the first half into the second stanza, and they were clearly the better team down the stretch.

Maryland earned a 47-38 rebounding advantage in the clash and limited the Golden Gophers to 31.3 percent shooting from the field.

Minnesota finished 9-22 last season, so the fact that Tubby Smith was able to guide the Gophers to 20 victories in his first season at the helm is extremely impressive.
