Coppin St. Shocks Morgan St. In MEAC Final, Reaches NCAA Tourney

Raleigh, NC -- (Sports Network) - Tywain McKee's jumper with three seconds left helped Coppin State top Morgan State, 62-60, to win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at the RBC Center.McKee finished with a game-high 33 points for the seventh-seeded Eagles (16-20), who will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997. They are also the first 20-loss team to reach the national tourney. Marquise Kately ended with 21 points for top-seeded Morgan State (22-10), which was searching for just its second tournament title and first since 1977. Reggie Holmes donated 14 points in defeat, while Boubacar Coly had a game-high 14 rebounds. The game was a battle from the opening tip, and Coppin State had the largest lead of the first half when it pulled ahead, 20-13, on a McKee trey at the midpoint. Morgan State answered with a brief 8-2 spurt, effectively closing the gap, and later jumped in front, 28-25, on a Kately three-point play. Kately scored the final seven points of the stanza for his squad, and the Bears held a slim 30-28 margin at intermission. Things continued to seesaw after the break and all the way down inside the final minutes. Coppin State was up 57-55 with just 1:56 to play before both sides traded threes to make it 60-58. Coppin State then called a timeout, but the Bears tied it on a pair of Jermaine Bolden free throws, making it 60-60 with 29 ticks remaining. The Eagles had one last push to the hoop, and with three seconds showing McKee's jumper put Coppin State on top. Holmes then missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer for Morgan State. Game Notes Morgan State swept the regular-season series, but the Eagles lead the all-time series, 47-14...Coppin State has won 12 of its last 13 games after starting the season 4-19.
