Charlotte, NC -- (Sports Network) - Lance Hurdle put in 15 points as Miami- Florida downed North Carolina State, 63-50, in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. James Dews donated 14 points and five rebounds and Brian Asbury added nine points and six boards for the Hurricanes (22-9), who will play Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals on Friday. J.J. Hickson had a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack (15-16), who closed out their season with nine straight losses. The Hurricanes came storming out the game and held an 11-2 lead on an Eddie Rios layup with 12:20 to play in the first half. The Wolfpack caught their breath and used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 14-14 on Hickson's free throw with 7:33 left in the half. However, Miami scored the next 10 points, which helped the team take a 24-17 lead into the locker room. Miami scored eight straight points as part of a 12-2 run in the second half, and after Jack McClinton drained a pair of free throws, the team held a 42-25 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Wolfpack were unable to cut into the deficit significantly as the Hurricanes hung on for the win.
