(Sports Network) - Matt Janning poured in a game-high 24 points, as the Northeastern Huskies downed the Providence Friars, 70-66, in non-conference action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

Janning made 10-of-14 shots from the floor and grabbed six boards for Northeastern (2-1), which defeated Providence for the first time since the 1926-27 season. Eugene Spates also got involved, notching 17 points on 5-of-7 three-pointers.

Weyinmi Efejuku netted 16 points to lead the Friars (0-1), who suffered their first season-opening loss since 1999. Jonathan Kale added 15 points and five rebounds, while Brian McKenzie chipped in with 12 points.

The Huskies forced the Friars into 12 turnovers in the first half and that helped them open a 26-25 lead at the break.

In the second half, Janning's three-pointer with 1:48 remaining broke a 63-63 tie and lifted Northeastern to the four-point victory.

The Huskies nailed 9-of-15 long-range attempts, while also generating 20 points off 21 Providence turnovers.
