GAME NOTES: Second round play of the CBI Tournament will pit the Virginia Cavaliers against the Old Dominion Monarchs this evening at the John Paul Jones Arena. Old Dominion opened tournament play with a tough, 66-63 victory over the Rider Broncs. It was the seventh win in the last nine games for ODU, which is now 18-15 on the year. The Monarchs are a meager 5-8 on the road this season, but since the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign ODU has posted a 21-19 mark away from home. As for the Cavs, they grabbed a thrilling, 66-64 victory over Richmond in first round action this past Tuesday. It was the fifth win in the last eight games for Virginia, which fell in the first round of the ACC Tournament to Georgia Tech, 94-76. Overall Virginia is a mediocre 16-15 on the season, and that includes a 12-6 mark at the John Paul Jones Arena. In terms of the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the Cavs have won eight of the 12 meetings, including an 87-49 win over the Monarchs in the last matchup back in 1996.
The Monarchs have relied on their defensive play all season and are currently limiting the opposition to just 63.9 ppg, while holding teams to a mere 41.4 percent shooting from the floor. The strong defensive play continued in the opening round against Rider, as the squad held the Broncs to just 41.0 percent shooting, and also forced 16 turnovers. At the other end of the floor the Monarchs used a 46.8 percent shooting effort, and a very strong performance from the bench, which outscored Rider's reserves 30-0. Frank Hassell led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Brandon Johnson tallied 10 points to go along with seven boards and six assists. As for the team's leading scorer, Gerald Lee (12.8 ppg), he finished with only four points in the win.
As for the Cavs, they have done a tremendous job offensively, averaging 76.5 ppg, while shooting 43.2 percent from the floor. Virginia has done a strong job on the glass as well, outrebounding opponents by a 5.5 rpg margin. Sean Singletary has done everything for Virginia, as the guard is pacing the team with 19.8 ppg, 184 assists and 57 steals. Mamadi Diane and Adrian Joseph have done a solid job in the paint, as Diane is posting 11.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg, while Joseph is contributing 9.9 ppg to go along with a team-best 6.0 rpg. In the first round win over Richmond, the Cavs shot 46.8 percent from the floor and made 6-of-14 attempts from behind the arc. Singletary led the way with 18 points, while Diane tallied 15 points to go along with five rebounds. Jamil Tucker chipped in 10 points off the bench.
This should be a low-scoring affair between two tough defensive teams. However, the Cavs have a dangerous scorer in Singletary and he should be able to lead Virginia to victory.
