GAME NOTES: The Washington Huskies will try to collect their first victory of the season when they host the Arizona State Sun Devils in a Pac-10 Conference showdown this Saturday evening at Husky Stadium. Since winning their first two games of the season, the Sun Devils have dropped six consecutive games, including a heartbreaking, 27-25 loss to Oregon State this past weekend. The loss dropped ASU to a mere 1-3 in league action and an even worse 0-3 on the road. As for the Huskies they are winless in eight games this year, and since last season the team has dropped 10 consecutive matchups. The last time Washington was on the field the team was pounded by USC, 56-0. Since taking over at Washington, coach Ty Willingham has struggled against conference foes, leading his Huskies to a pathetic 6-25 ledger in Pac-10 play, a key factor in Willingham's departure at the end of this year. With respect to the all-time series, the Huskies hold a 15-12 edge over Arizona State. However, the Sun Devils have won the last four meetings, including a 44-20 victory this past season.

Coming into this season the Sun Devils were supposed to possess one of the more dangerous offensive units in the conference, but that has not been the case, as the team is producing just 328.9 total ypg, which has led to a mere 20.0 ppg. Rudy Carpenter was supposed to be one of the top signal callers in the nation, but the senior quarterback has struggled mightily, throwing for just 1,837 yards and 10 TDs against seven interceptions. The ground game has been even worse as the team is averaging a terrible 85.9 ypg. The offensive woes for ASU continued in the recent setback to Oregon State, as the team tallied just 295 total yards. Shaun DeWitty led the way with 110 rushing yards on just 16 carries in the contest, but as a team the Sun Devils netted just 78 yards on 2.4 ypc. Carpenter was once again less than impressive, throwing for just 217 yards and one score. The quarterback did complete 15-of-27 passes, but was sacked five times.

The defense has been able to hold things together for part of the season, but overall the unit is surrendering 364.8 total ypg, and that has led to 26.6 ppg. The Sun Devils have also struggled to make big plays, as the team has forced just 13 turnovers, while also collecting only 10 sacks on the year. In the setback to Oregon State, the defense had a tough time against the pass, as the unit was torched for 261 yards and three scores. Overall the unit surrendered 370 total yards and allowed Oregon State to convert on all three of its red zone chances. Mike Nixon led the way in the loss for ASU, racking up 12 tackles, while Morris Wooten collected 11 stops.

Nothing has gone right for the Huskies offensively, as the team is producing an embarrassing 277.6 total ypg, and that has led to an equally poor 14.4 ppg. The ground game has been so atrocious that quarterback Jake Locker, who has only played four games before suffering an injury, leads the team with 180 rushing yards and three scores. Unfortunately, the passing attack has been just as bad, as Locker's replacement Ronnie Fouch has been dreadful under center. The quarterback has completed just 47.9 percent of his throws and has just four touchdowns against seven interceptions. The terrible offensive play for Washington continued in the loss to USC, as the Huskies were blanked, and held to just 184 total yards. Washington finished with just 71 rushing yards on 2.4 ypc, and Fouch also had a tough time in the contest, throwing for just 113 yards. The quarterback completed just 14-of-33 throws and was intercepted three times.

The defense has been just as bad for the Huskies, as the unit is being abused for 480.2 total ypg, and that has led to a whopping 41.6 ppg. The defense has struggled against the run as well as the pass, allowing the opposition to rumble for 243.2 ypg on the ground, while also surrendering another 237.0 ypg through the air. The defense has also been unable to make many big plays, collecting just five takeaways, while recording only five sacks. The team's inability to stop the run was evident against USC, as the Trojans gashed Washington for 297 yards and six touchdowns on 6.5 ypc. Overall the defense was abused for 485 total yards and also allowed USC to convert on 7-of-8 red zone chances. Trenton Tuiasosopo led the defense was 12 tackles in the loss, while Tripper Johnson added 11 stops for Washington.

The Huskies are clearly one of the worst teams in the nation, and although the Sun Devils have struggled as well, expect Arizona State to snap its six-game losing skid with a close win on the road.
