Bloomington, IN -- (Sports Network) - Ben Chappell threw for three touchdowns as he led the Indiana Hoosiers to a 27-14 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini in Big Ten Conference action at Memorial Stadium. Chappell converted 23-of-38 passing for 333 yards for the Hoosiers (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten) as they snapped a three-game slide. Tandon Doss collected seven receptions for a game-high 130 yards and a score for the squad. Illinois (1-5, 0-4), losers of four in a row, were paced by Juice Williams who connected on 22-of-37 for 258 yards and two touchdowns, adding 54 yards rushing on 15 carries in the losing cause. Following a scoreless first quarter, Nick Freeland put the Hoosiers on the board with a 35-yard field goal. Illinois countered when Williams and A.J. Jenkins combined on a 30-yard scoring play that capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive. However, from there Indiana ripped off 24 unanswered points. With under a minute remaining in the first half Chappell hit Damarlo Belcher with a 29-yard scoring pass and as time expired in the period Freeland knocked through a 37-yard field goal to make the score 13-7 in favor of the home team. A scoreless third frame led to Chappell throwing touchdown passes of 44 and 13 yards to Doss and Troy Wagner, respectively, in a span of just over two minutes in the fourth quarter, giving Indiana a huge 27-7 advantage. The ensuing possession saw Williams guide the Illini down the field, eating up six minutes and 71 yards on 17 plays, finishing off with a three-yard scoring pass to Jeff Cumberland, but it was too little, too late in the 13-point decision. Midway through the second quarter the action on the field came to a halt after Illinois safety Donsay Hardeman went down with an injury and was subsequently taken from the field on a backboard and a carted off to a local hospital. While he was able to move his arms and legs, the precautions taken were based on a prior injury last season that required Hardeman to have surgery to repair cracked vertebrae.
