NCAA Game Summary - Nicholls State At Furman

Greenville, SC -- Ingle Martin threw for one touchdown and ran for another score, as third-ranked Furman held off No. 21 Nicholls State, 14-12, in the first round of the Division I-AA playoffs. Martin completed just 5-of-12 passes for 68 yards and was picked off once for the Paladins (10-2), who advanced to a quarterfinal matchup against Richmond. Yale Vannoy hit on just 3-of-8 passes for 72 yards and a TD for the Colonels (6-4), who also got 90 yards rushing from Joseph Tobias. Alex Romero hit field goals of 34 and 20 yards in the first half for Nicholls State, but Martin connected with Justin Stepp on a 29-yard TD strike with 1:24 left in the half to give Furman a 7-6 lead. Martin capped a 15-play, 57-yard march with a one-yard run with 8:06 left in the third quarter. The Colonels scored their touchdown with 2:02 left in the third when Vannoy hit Kenley Horton with a 22-yard pass. However, Vannoy fumbled on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt. Scott Beckler, who missed a 36-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter, had a 45-yard try blocked by Nicholls State with 12:12 left in the fourth. Nicholls State was able to advance the ball to the Furman 39 following a Martin fumble in the fourth. However, Tobias was stopped on a 4th-and-2 play, and Furman ran out the remaining 4:52.
