GAME NOTES: The Illinois Fighting Illini will try to earn bowl eligibility in Evanston this weekend, as they do battle with the Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten play at Ryan Field. It has been a disappointing season for the Illini, which comes into the game under .500 at 5-6 overall. Last weekend, Illinois closed out its home slate with a 30-20 setback to nationally-ranked Ohio State. It was the second loss in a row for the Illini, as it dipped to 3-4 within the conference. Still, with a win in its regular season finale this weekend, Illinois would become eligible for a bowl for the second straight season. As for Northwestern, it is already assured a bowl appearance for the first time since 2005 with an 8-3 overall mark. The Wildcats concluded their road schedule last weekend, pulling out a 21-14 victory at Michigan. With that outcome and a victory this weekend, Northwestern would post just its fifth nine-win campaign in school history. In terms of the all-time series, Illinois holds a 52-44-5 edge versus the Wildcats. The teams have been battling for the Sioux Tomahawk Trophy since 1945, and the Illini also lead that series by a 32-27-2 margin.

Offensively, the Illini are one of the more dangerous teams in the Big Ten, as they are averaging 30.4 ppg on a hardy 447.3 total ypg. The team has displayed the ability to run (173.7 ypg) and throw (274.5 ypg) successfully, but has had some issues with turnovers, committing 24 on the year. Last weekend, Illinois rolled up 455 total yards versus a stout Ohio State defense, although it came in a losing cause. The Illini gained 214 of those yards on the ground, but also committed a pair of turnovers. Quarterback Juice Williams guided the Illini with 192 yards and two touchdowns through the air and another 48 yards on the ground. The dual-threat gunslinger has enjoyed a successful campaign despite 15 interceptions. In 11 games, he has thrown for 2,961 yards and 22 touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 625 yards and five more scores. His main target is Arrelious Benn, who tops the club with 63 receptions and 1,012 yards. In the backfield, Daniel Dufrene paces Illinois with 654 yards and he also ranks second with 24 catches. Last weekend, Dufrene rushed for 78 yards on eight carries, while also pulling down five passes for 42 yards.

Illinois does have some weaknesses on the defensive side of things, as the unit is permitting 26.5 ppg and 351.4 total ypg. The defense is allowing 156.9 ypg on the ground and 194.5 ypg through air and has recorded just five interceptions. In last weekend's loss, the Illini was simply abused by Ohio State's ground attack, yielding 305 rushing yards. The defense also failed to record a single sack and that was a bit surprising considering it had amassed 33 in the 10 prior outings. Brit Miller highlights this defense, as the tackling machine has made 124 stops on the year. He also paces the squad with 15.5 TFLs and six sacks this season.

The Wildcats are gaining a solid 151.1 rushing ypg and an equally as good 207.5 passing ypg, but they are only averaging 24.3 ppg because of their inability to hang onto the ball, committing 26 turnovers on the season. Last weekend, Northwestern was limited to just 257 yards with two turnovers, but its defense came up big in a 21-14 win over Michigan. C.J. Bacher led the charge, as he threw for 198 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was a typical effort from Bacher, who has passed for 1,898 yards but with 12 touchdowns against 13 interceptions this season. Ross Lane and Eric Peterman have been his two main outlets and they have combined for 93 catches, 1,049 yards and five touchdowns. Last weekend, Lane pulled in seven balls for 77 yards and a score, while Peterman had five receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. Stephen Simmons has taken over at tailback with injuries to the team's other options and he rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries last weekend.

Northwestern has done a good job of keeping opponents off the scoreboard this season, limiting its foes to 20.2 ppg. Overall, the Wildcats holding opponents to 128.1 rushing ypg and 215.6 passing ypg, while registering 20 takeaways and 28 sacks. Last weekend, the Wildcats limited Michigan's offense to just 264 total yard and one touchdown. The unit forced a pair of turnovers in the win and allowed Michigan to convert just 5-of-20 third down chances. Brad Phillips had seven stops, while Corey Wootton posted a sack and a forced fumble. On the season, Phillips leads the Wildcats with 92 tackles and Wootton tops the roster with 14.5 TFls and 8.5 sacks.

The Illini need this game more than the Wildcats do, so look for Juice Williams to put up big numbers and carry Illinois to the victory.
