NCAA Game Summary - Cal Poly At Texas State

POSTED: 7:41 pm CST December 3, 2005

Barrick Nealy completed 18-of-33 passes for 211 yards and ran for a touchdown, as the fourth-ranked Texas State Bobcats defeated the No. 10 Cal Poly Mustangs, 14-7, in the quarterfinals of the Division I-AA playoffs.

Nealy, a finalist for the Walter Payton Award as Division I-AA's top player, also rushed for 53 yards in the Texas State (11-2) victory. James Noble rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown.

The Bobcats will now face the Northern Iowa Panthers in next week's semifinals. The Panthers defeated New Hampshire, 24-21, earlier on Saturday.

Matt Brennan threw for 120 yards on 9-of-20 passing with an interception for the Mustangs (9-4), who saw a four-game win streak come to an end. Douglas Sherman rushed 18 times for 125 yards and a touchdown in defeat.

Texas State is now 9-0 at Bobcat Stadium this season.

The Bobcats opened the scoring late in the first quarter. Nealy scrambled from 17 yards out, dashing up the middle of the field for the touchdown, giving the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.

Cal Poly had a great chance to tie the game late in the second quarter, but on a quarterback sneak, Brennan fumbled at the one-yard line and Texas State recovered to head into halftime with a 7-0 advantage.

The Bobcats went up 14-0 late in the third quarter as Sherman scored from five yards out capping a 10-play, 59-yard drive.

With 4:11 to play in the game, the Mustangs avoided the shutout as Noble ran in from eight yards out.

However, the Bobcats ran out the remaining time, also converting a fourth down pass deep in Cal Poly territory.
