NCAA Game Summary - Louisiana-Lafayette At Kansas State

POSTED: 9:22 pm EDT September 18, 2004

Darren Sproles erupted for a team-record 294 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries as the Kansas State Wildcats pounded the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns, 40-20, in a non-conference clash from KSU Stadium.

Sproles broke his own record of 273 yards which he set against Missouri last season.

Kansas State (2-1) needed little support through the air, though Dylan Meier did complete 7-of-10 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. He also added for 37 yards and two scores on the ground, contributing to the Wildcats' 393-yard rushing total.

UL-Lafayette (1-2) was led by Jerry Babb, who accounted for two touchdowns while registering 128 yards passing and 101 yards rushing. Babb connected on just 9-of-23 pass attempts, however, and was picked off twice.

Joe Rheem booted a 41-yard field goal to start the scoring for Kansas State at the 10:45 mark of the first quarter, followed by a 35-yard touchdown run from Sproles midway through the frame. Rheem struck again, from 34 yards out, in the final minute of the quarter to give the Wildcats a 13-0 lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns pulled to within 13-7 early in the second stanza on a 39- yard TD pass from Babb to B.J. Crist. Kansas State answered with just under six minutes to play in the half, as Meier hit Brian Casey from seven yards out to give Kansas State a 20-7 advantage at the break.

Meier reached the end zone on a one-yard run to open the scoring in the second half, giving the Wildcats a 27-7 lead in the process. Rheem added to the cushion with a 33-yard field goal before UL-Lafayette trimmed the deficit to 30-14 on Babb's nine-yard touchdown run with 4:01 to play in the third quarter.

Babb set up the Cajuns' next score with an 80-yard run in the fourth quarter, leading to Chester Johnson's one-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, however, and UL-Lafayette still trailed 30-20 with 10 minutes to play.

It was as close as the Cajuns would get, as Kansas State tacked on 10 unanswered points to seal the victory down the stretch. Meier reached paydirt on a five-yard scamper, followed by a 33-yard field goal from Rheem to cap the scoring.

The Wildcats finished with 445 total yards, while UL-Lafayette gained 342 yards. Kansas State enjoyed a nearly 13-minute advantage in time of possession, and compiled 25 first downs to the Cajuns' 15.
