Robinson Out At Syracuse

POSTED: 5:23 pm CST November 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - Syracuse University head football coach Greg Robinson has been fired, the school announced Sunday.

Director of athletics Dr. Daryl Gross made the announcement a day after Syracuse lost 39-14 to Connecticut, dropping the Orange's record to 2-8. Robinson will continue coaching until the end of the season.

Gross said Syracuse the search for the school's next head coach will begin immediately.

"I have made the decision to move our football program in a new direction and have informed Greg Robinson that his tenure as Syracuse's head coach will end at the conclusion of this season," Gross said in a statement.

"Coach Robinson worked very hard to try to establish a winning program, one that could eventually compete for the conference championship on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the progress we expected to see has not occurred."

Robinson was hired in 2005 to replace Paul Pasqualoni, who in 14 years with Syracuse guided teams to a 107-59-1 record and had just one losing season -- a 4-8 mark in 2002.

By contrast, Robinson-led Syracuse teams have gone 9-36 and have never posted a .500 season.

"The timing of this announcement allows us to end rumor and speculation and provides us ample time to hire a head coach who has shown the capability to produce a winning football program that the Syracuse nation can be proud of," Gross said.

It was the first-ever head coaching position for Robinson, who spent over 30 years as an assistant at both the college and pro levels. He had a stint as co-defensive coordinator at Texas and spent 14 years in the NFL as defensive coordinator with Kansas City, Denver -- where his defenses helped the Broncos win back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997-98 -- and the New York Jets.
