GAME NOTES: The Phil Fulmer era comes to a close this weekend in Knoxville as the Tennessee Volunteers finish the regular season against the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky opened the season with four consecutive victories, and the squad held those four foes to a grand total of 22 points. Since then, however, the Wildcats have struggled through a brutal SEC schedule, posting only two victories in seven outings. The last two contests have resulted in defeat, including a 31-24 setback to Vanderbilt on November 15th. Kentucky had an open date last weekend, giving the squad two weeks to prepare for the Vols. Tennessee will say goodbye to Fulmer, who is the second winningest coach in school history with a 151-52 record. He has been affiliated with the school for 32 years, including four as a player and 28 as a member of the coaching staff in some capacity. The Vols are a bitterly disappointing 4-7 overall, including 2-5 in conference, but they did manage to halt a three-game slide with a 20-10 road win over Vanderbilt last weekend. Tennessee has won its last 23 meetings with Kentucky, including a 52-50 thriller over the Wildcats in four overtimes last season. The Vols own a 71-23-9 series lead over the Vols.

Kentucky is averaging 23.5 ppg and 308.0 total ypg this season. The squad is posting 3.9 ypc on the ground and 9.7 yards per pass completion, and both numbers are a bit low. At 5-11 and 185 pounds, freshman quarterback Randall Cobb is undersized by SEC standards. He has taken over for Mike Hartline as the team's primary quarterback, but the results have been a bit mixed. Cobb has completed only 52.2 percent of his passes for 519 yards and two touchdowns against five interceptions. As a runner, Cobb has gained 294 yards and seven scores. Kentucky has already lost its best runner and receiver for the season, and those injuries help to explain the recent slide. In the seven-point loss to Vanderbilt last time out, Cobb was able to pass for 144 yards while rushing for 72 yards and one touchdown. On a down note, Cobb only completed 11-of-26 pass attempts and was intercepted twice. The Wildcats finished with 241 total yards and were 1-of-10 on third-down conversion attempts. Kentucky lost the time of possession battle by more than 18 minutes.

Opponents are scoring 21.1 ppg against Kentucky, which is yielding 328.5 total ypg. The Wildcats haven't been as tough as they were against non-conference opponents early on, but it hasn't been often that the defense has been pushed around. With 27 sacks and 25 takeaways, Kentucky has made its fair share of big plays. Micah Johnson its tops on the roster with 9.5 TFLs, while both Marcus McClinton and Trevard Lindley have four interceptions. Kentucky had a difficult time stopping the run in its last outing against Vanderbilt, as the Commodores were able to rush for 213 yards on 43 attempts, an average of five yards per attempt. Also, Vandy was able to throw three touchdown passes in the clash and scored on all three of its trips to the red zone.

The Tennessee offense deserves very little credit for the victory over Vanderbilt last weekend. The Vols only managed 243 total yards in the clash and finished with three turnovers. They completed a mere 4-of-9 passes and had a lowly total of 21 passing yards. Tennessee did run for 222 yards and held possession for over 35 minutes. On a down note, the Vols were just 4-of-13 on third down conversion attempts. Generating offense has been a major problem area for Tennessee all season, as the squad is only averaging 16.4 ppg and 264.9 total ypg. With just 18 offensive touchdowns thus far, including seven passing scores, the Vols aren't going to scare any opponents. Jonathan Crompton and Nick Stephens have both seen significant time under center, but neither has been able to lead the offense effectively. No player on the team has rushed for more than 511 yards, as Tennessee has featured a backfield-by- committee approach. Put simply, there is absolutely nothing to get excited about when watching this offense.

Tennessee safety Eric Berry may very well be the best player at his position in the nation. In last week's victory over Vanderbilt, Berry intercepted a pass and raced 45 yards for a touchdown. The defense played tremendous, as Vanderbilt's only touchdown came on an interception return. Sure, the Vols have endured many losses this season, but overall the defense has played well. Opponents are only scoring 17.4 ppg against Tennessee, which is yielding a mere 269.9 total ypg. The Vols have been tremendous against the run, limiting foes to 2.8 ypc and 103.7 ypg. Also, they have come up with 17 interceptions, seven of which have been registered by Berry. Robert Ayers is tops on the roster with 14.5 TFLs.

One can only imagine that the Vols will play hard for Fulmer this weekend. Kentucky is missing key offensive weapons and won't be able to keep up with Tennessee.
