GAME NOTES: The UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns will try to remain undefeated in Sun Belt Conference action when they battle the Florida Atlantic Owls this Saturday at Lockhart Stadium. The Cajuns saw their four-game winning streak come to an end this past weekend with a 37-24 loss to UTEP. The loss dropped ULL to just 5-4 on the season, but despite the mediocre overall ledger the Cajuns are still a perfect 4-0 in league action. As for the Owls, they have won three straight games since losing five of their first six games. The last time FAU was on the field the team grabbed a convincing, 46-13 victory over North Texas. The win pushed the Owls league ledger to 2-2 and their home mark to 2-1. This will be the fourth matchup between ULL and FAU on the gridiron. The Owls posted a 39-32 overtime victory this past season and now hold a 2-1 edge over the Cajuns. The Cajuns' success offensively can be attributed to their tremendous ground game which is averaging 289.9 ypg, and out of the 41 touchdowns scored by this unit 29 have come via the run. Overall the Cajuns come into this matchup averaging a whopping 479.6 total ypg, and that has led to an equally impressive 35.9 ppg. Tyrell Fenroy has been one of the top running backs in the nation and comes into this contest with 1,177 yards and 16 touchdowns. Quarterback Michael Desormeaux has also contributed to the ground game, rushing for 795 yards and five scores. Desormeaux has also thrown for 1,477 yards on the year, but has just nine touchdowns against eight interceptions. In the team's recent matchup against UTEP the Cajuns posted 384 total yards, but still fell to the Miners by 13 points. Fenroy paced the team with 126 yards and one score while Desormeaux added just 43 rushing yards. Unfortunately the signal caller only threw for 185 yards and one score, but also tossed three interceptions. Unfortunately the defense has not done much to help ULL this season, as the team is allowing 418.2 total ypg, and that has led to 32.0 ppg. The unit has struggled against the run and pass, as the team is being gashed for 198.3 ypg, while also being torched for 219.9 ypg though the air. The Cajuns have also had trouble forcing the big play, and come into this game with just 15 takeaways and 15 sacks. In the recent loss to UTEP the defense for ULL struggled again, allowing 408 total yards, including 294 yards through the air. The defense did force two turnovers in the game, but allowed the Miners to convert 8-of-12 third down chances, and 4-of-5 red zone attempts. Orkeys Auriene led the way in the loss with eight tackles, while three other players tallied seven stops apiece. The Owls have not enjoyed as much success as their counterpart, racking up 376.9 total ypg, but that has led to a mere 21.2 ppg. The team has produced a respectable 142.0 ypg on the ground, while adding another 234.9 ypg through the air. Charles Pierre has been the top option in the backfield for FAU, as the tailback has rushed for 734 yards and five touchdowns on 6.7 ypc. Unfortunately Rusty Smith has been a tad inconsistent under center, throwing for 2,043 yards and 12 scores, but also has 12 interceptions on the year as well. Surprisingly, however, the last time FAU was on the field the team was outstanding on offense, racking up 507 yards en route to the 33-point win over North Texas. Pierre led the ground game with 140 yards and one score, while Smith added 237 yards and four scores through the air. Defensively the Owls have been unable to perform at a high level, as the team is surrendering 377.7 total ypg, and that has led to 27.2 ppg. The main problem for this unit has come against the run, as the defense is being pounded for 183.7 ypg, and out of the 30 touchdowns allowed by this unit, 18 have come via the run. Florida Atlantic has also struggled to make big plays, forcing just 12 turnovers, while collecting a meager nine sacks. Fortunately the last time the Owls were on the field the team put forth a strong defensive showing, limiting North Texas to just 255 total yards, including just 122 rushing yards on 3.3 ypc. Edward Bradwell and Greg Joseph both grabbed six tackles apiece in the win. The main problem for the Owls has been their inability to stop the run, and that should be an issue this weekend against the Cajuns. ULL possesses a dominating ground attack and should run all over FAU. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: UL-Lafayette 41, Florida Atlantic 28Saturday, November 15th, 4:00 p.m. (et)
