Red-Hot Rays Roll Into Seattle
(Sports Network) - Coming off one of their most dramatic wins of the season, the Tampa Bay Rays begin a 10-game road trip tonight with the first of four straight tests against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.Tampa Bay, which leads the American League East by three games over Boston, has won seven of its last eight games and left home yesterday winners after rallying from three runs down to post a 10-7 victory over Cleveland. Trailing 7-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Gabe Gross followed an RBI hit by Eric Hinske with a two-run homer to even the game at seven. Akinori Iwamura then singled and Ben Zobrist walked before Carlos Pena ended the game with a three-run homer to center. Jason Bartlett finished with three hits, Dioner Navarro added a two-run homer and Evan Longoria drove in a pair of runs in the victory, which came despite Rays outfielder Carl Crawford missing his third straight game with a sore left hamstring and B.J. Upton on the bench for not running out a ground ball on Tuesday. Crawford, who is questionable for tonight's game, is a career .345 hitter against Seattle with two homers and 16 RBI. The comeback victory improved Tampa Bay to 45-17 as the host this year. The Rays will now try to improve on their 23-28 mark on the road. Andy Sonnanstine starts for Tampa Bay and halted a three-start skid on Saturday versus Detroit after allowing just two runs on seven hits over six innings. The right-hander had allowed 14 runs over his previous 19 innings. Sonnanstine was 6-10 with a 5.85 earned run average in 22 starts last year, but is now 11-6 with a 4.58 ERA in 22 starts this season. The 25-year-old is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two career outings versus Seattle, including a loss against the club on April 9. Seattle is 3-3 on a 10-game homestand and is coming off a series win over Minnesota Twins, though it did lose Wednesday's finale, 7-3. Jarrod Washburn (5-11) took the loss after allowing four runs - three earned - on five hits and three walks in six innings, while striking out six. Jeremy Reed was 2-for-2 with a run scored, RBI and a walk for Seattle, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Adrian Beltre had two hits and two RBI Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fifth and is batting .385 (20-for-52) with 10 runs scored over the run. He is 3-for-5 in his career versus Sonnanstine and his hitting .298 lifetime versus Tampa Bay with three homers, 18 RBI and 40 runs scored. Felix Hernandez toes the rubber for Seattle, and he is just 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts since returning from a sprained left ankle that landed him on the disabled list. The 22-year-old phenom lost to Baltimore on Saturday after allowing two runs on eight hits over five innings of work. Hernandez is 7-7 with a 3.04 ERA this season, and the 22-year-old is 1-1 with a 2.90 ERA in four career starts against Tampa Bay. Seattle won two of three when these clubs met in Tampa Bay from April 8-10.
