Cleveland, OH -- (Sports Network) - Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run home run as the Chicago White Sox avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians with a 4-2 win at Progressive Field. Orlando Cabrera drove in a run while Nick Swisher hit a solo home run for the White Sox, who had dropped five of six coming into the game. Javier Vazquez (11-12) worked six innings and gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts for Chicago, which moved a game ahead of Minnesota for first place in the AL Central. The Twins were 5-4 losers in 11 innings at Toronto Wednesday night. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run double while Jeremy Sowers (2-8) was handed the loss for giving up four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work for the Indians, who have lost four of their last six.Final Score: Boston 5, Baltimore 4 Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Alex Cora scored the game-winning run in the ninth to help the Boston Red Sox to a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles to complete a three-game sweep at Fenway Park. In the ninth, Cora led off with a single and Coco Crisp then reached first with a bunt that just stayed fair along the right line. Jacoby Ellsbury then laid down a bunt and pitcher Jim Miller (0-1) opted to go to third, but threw the ball well wide of the bag and Cora came home for the win. Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored while Mark Kotsay hit a two-run triple for the Red Sox, who have won five of six. Daisuke Matsuzaka started on the mound and was charged with four runs -- three earned -- on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in six frames. Justin Masterson (5-4) got the win for throwing two scoreless innings for Boston, which trails Tampa Bay by three games for first place in the AL East. The Rays lost, 8-4, to the Yankees Wednesday night. Aubrey Huff went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Lance Cormier started on the mound and gave up just two hits in three innings of work for the Orioles, who have dropped their last six games. Cormier started in place of ace Jeremy Guthrie, who was skipped a turn in the rotation due to a tired arm. Final Score: Texas 1, Seattle 0 Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Dustin Nippert was stellar on the hill and Milton Bradley drove in the game's lone run, as the Texas Rangers edged the Seattle Mariners, 1-0, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Nippert (2-4) surrendered just seven hits over seven frames while fanning four batters to take the win. Frank Francisco worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save. Josh Hamilton went 3-for-4 and Michael Young scored the run for the Rangers, who have won three of four. Felix Hernandez (9-9) was the hard-luck loser, as he yielded a run on seven hits through 7 1/3 frames while fanning three and walking one. Jose Lopez and Raul Ibanez had a double each, the only two extra-base hits for the Mariners, who have dropped two straight following a four-game win streak. Final Score: Toronto 5, Minnesota 4 (11 innings) Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - John McDonald's hit in the bottom of the 11th inning sent Toronto past Minnesota, 5-4, in the middle contest of a three-game set from Rogers Centre. Eddie Guardado (3-4) allowed a leadoff double to Scott Rolen and a single from Travis Snider. Boof Bonser got the nod but surrendered the game-deciding single to McDonald, a line drive to the warning track in center. Jesse Carlson (6-1) got the win by holding the Twins at bay in the top of the 11th. Joe Inglett hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who have won four games in a row. A.J. Burnett was charged with six hits and three runs, fanning eight with four walks in his start of 6 2/3 innings. Joe Mauer had a pair of hits and drove in three while Brendan Harris knocked in the other run for the Twins, who have dropped two straight and three of four. Starter Nick Blackburn went 6 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and three runs -- two earned -- with six strikeouts. Minnesota fell one game behind Chicago in the race for the AL Central crown, after the White Sox topped Cleveland, 4-2, earlier Wednesday. Final Score: New York 8, Tampa Bay 4 St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Alex Rodriguez moved into 12th place on baseball's all-time home run list with his 549th homer, a play which saw the first use of instant replay, as the New York Yankees earned an 8-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Rodriguez finished 3-for-4 with four RBI for the Yankees, who have won three straight and five of seven to stay within seven games of Boston in the wild card race and 10 of the Rays in the AL East. Jason Giambi drove in a run, extending his streak to eight games with an RBI. Hideki Matsui, Robinson Cano and Ivan Rodriguez each had an RBI in the win. Starter Carl Pavano lasted four-plus innings and was touched for three runs on six hits in the no-decision. Edwar Ramirez (5-1), Phil Coke and Brian Bruney combined for four innings of one-hit relief. Gabe Gross hit a two-run homer for the Rays, who have lost two straight and four of nine. Cliff Floyd and Akinori Iwamura drove in a run each in defeat. The Rays still own a three-game lead over the Red Sox in the AL East. Edwin Jackson (11-9) was dealt the loss after getting touched for six runs on 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work. Final Score: Detroit 9, LA Angels of Anaheim 6 Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Curtis Granderson tripled in the go-ahead run in the seventh and the Detroit Tigers went on to post a 9-6 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim, in the second of three games from Comerica Park. Placido Polanco had three hits and knocked in three runs while Granderson finished with three hits and scored three runs for the Tigers, who had dropped two in a row and three of four coming in. Starter Zach Miner surrendered five runs on eight hits without walking a batter over six frames. Kyle Farnsworth (2-2) got the win after entering in the seventh to toss 1 2/3 scoreless frames. Mark Teixeira had three hits including a home run with three RBI while Brandon Wood was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Angels, who have dropped two of three. Starter Jon Garland gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings of a no-decision. The magic number for the Angels to clinch the AL West championship remained at seven. Oakland at Kansas City, Postponed Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Wednesday night's game between the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 5:10 p.m. (et). The second game will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Dana Eveland (8-8) will pitch the opener for Oakland against Brian Bannister (7-14). The second game will feature Dan Meyer (0-3) taking the mound for the A's and Kyle Davies (5-6) pitching for the Royals.
