Philadelphia, PA -- (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia 76ers dealt forward Rodney Carney and center Calvin Booth to Minnesota on Wednesday along with a conditional first-round draft pick, in a trade apparently made to clear salary cap space to sign free-agent power forward Elton Brand. The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday night that the Sixers had convinced Brand to spurn the Los Angeles Clippers and sign a five-year deal worth around $80 million. Philadelphia needed extra cap space to make the offer, though, necessitating the deal with the Timberwolves. Minnesota will only part with a protected second-round pick in 2010 in exchange for Booth and Carney, both reserves for the Sixers last season. Carney, 24, was originally acquired by the Sixers in a draft night trade with Chicago in 2006. In 137 career games with 41 starts, the Memphis product has averaged 6.2 points and 1.9 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game. Booth, 32, signed as a free agent with the Sixers in September 2007. He saw action in 31 games last season, averaging 0.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 6.6 minutes per game. Booth also averaged 4.24 blocks per 48 minutes played.
