St. John's Web Site Offers Sex Abuse Info
Abbey Targets Site To College, Abbey Community, And Campus Neighbors
POSTED: 8:17 a.m. CDT July 2, 2002
St. John's Abbey has launched a Web site through which it is providing information about sexual misconduct charges against some of its monks and priests, and information in general about the abbey's response to the charges.
The Web site is designed to provide information to St. John's University students, alumni, friends of the university, parents of students and those living in the community, according to the St. Cloud Times.
The site includes explanations of the restrictions placed on more than one dozen monks and priests who have admitted to, or been accused of, sexual misconduct dating back as far as three decades ago.
It also explains why those officials haven't been expelled from the campus.
It also includes a general statement about responding to the sex-abuse crisis, along with policy information, viewpoints, homilies, related Web sites and suggested readings.
A lengthy, open letter of apology, written by St. John's Abbott John Klassen, is on the site. In it, he outlined the rationale for his response to the accusations and allegations, and ends by saying, " I am sorry for the pain we have caused others and I pledge to do everything in my power to lead this monastic community through a period of healing and reconciliation."
