Troopers: Road Rage Causes Fatal I-35E Crash
Troopers Say Man Killed In Early Morning Eagan Crash Involved In Incident
POSTED: 11:51 a.m. CDT July 10, 2002
There are reports that road rage played a role in a fatal multicar crash on Interstate 35E in Eagan early this morning.
Two victims of the incident involving five vehicles remained hospitalized in critical condition at Regions Hospital in downtown St. Paul late in the morning, according to a broadcast report in the Twin Cities.
Two other people were also hospitalized Wednesday morning with injuries described as less serious.
A fifth man was killed when his car overturned shortly after midnight near the Diffley Road exit.
State troopers said the driver of a Volkswagen sedan was closely following a pickup truck in what they describe as a road rage incident when the pickup driver suddenly put on his brakes.
The sedan driver rear-ended the pickup and then careened into a flip, with the car ending up upside down on the interstate, KSTP-TV reported.
Immediately after the incident, three other cars were involved in a chain-reaction pileup after a third driver struck the overturned sedan.
The driver of the sedan was killed, the television station reported. Two passengers in the overturned sedan are those critically hurt in the crash.
The 48-year-old Burnsville man driving the pickup truck wasn't seriously hurt in the incident.
State Troopers quickly closed the stretch of freeway, detouring traffic around the crash scene through the Diffley Road off and on ramps until about 7 a.m. while investigators reconstructed the incident and collected other evidence.
