Police: Man, Upset At Traffic, Opens Fire

Police Arrest New Prague Man Suspected Of Firing At Passing Cars

POSTED: 7:33 a.m. CDT July 22, 2002

A man living on a farm in New Prague is in custody Monday morning after he allegedly walked a road near his house shooting at passing cars early Saturday morning. There were no reports of injuries.

Authorities said the man was upset at traffic passing by the shed he lived in on his family's farm in this town southwest of the Twin Cities.

After receiving a call of the man firing a shotgun at the cars, police arrived at about 11 p.m. Sunday evening and tracked the man's path into a soybean field. His mother was on the scene when deputies arrived.

"He indicated that he was out on the road shooting at cars," Dave Gliszinski, LeSueur County sheriff, told WMNN-Radio. "He gave himself up."

The 42-year-old man remained in custody Sunday, and is expected to make his initial court appearance Monday at which a judge will review charges again him and could order a psychological evaluation.

He did strike three passing cars with shots, but no one was injured. He fired several more shots, and after giving himself up, deputies found a 12-gauge shotgun and about 15 rounds of ammunition, according to a wire report.
