POSTED: 7:51 a.m. CDT August 30, 2002
A Monday funeral is planned for a Savage teen who collapsed and later died during a practice run with the Burnsville High School cross country team Thursday.
Michael Mundy, 13, collapsed near the intersection of Portland Avenue and Cliff Road during a light run of about 1.5 miles Wednesday in preparation for a Thursday race Friday, according to the school district.
Mundy was rushed to Farview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville where he was later pronounced dead.
Mundy's father said the cause of death hasn't yet been determined, but that the autopsy did show that a portion of his son's heart was enlarged, according to a broadcast report in the Twin Cities.
He had passed a physical prior to participating with the team, and had practiced for the last three weeks, according to the report.
Mundy was to start 7th grade next week at Eagle Ridge Junior High School, and school psychologists and counselors were on hand for team members.
Both boys' and girls' teams from the district withdrew from Thursday's cross country meet.
