Pittsburgh, PA -- (Sports Network) - Josh Scobee's 25-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining gave the Jacksonville Jaguars a 31-29 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had recovered from an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit, in a rain-soaked AFC wild card matchup at Heinz Field. David Garrard passed for 140 yards and rushed for 58 more, including a huge fourth-down scramble that set up Scobee's go-ahead kick, as the Jaguars (12-5) became the first team in NFL history to defeat the Steelers in Pittsburgh twice during the same season. Maurice Jones-Drew had 168 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns and the Jacksonville defense forced Ben Roethlisberger into four turnovers on its way to clinching a date with either New England or Indianapolis next weekend. Roethlisberger finished the game 29-for-42 for 337 yards with two touchdowns, but fumbled once in addition to being picked three times, as the Steelers (10-7) lost for the fourth time in the last five weeks. Hines Ward had 10 catches for 135 yards and Najeh Davenport rushed for a pair of scores, but the Steelers trailed 28-10 heading to the final quarter, and despite a furious rally to take the lead, were eliminated in their first postseason game since winning Super Bowl XL. "I've got to give Pittsburgh so much credit," said Jaguars running back Fred Taylor, who rushed 16 times for 48 yards and a score. "They've been in this situation before. They fought for every TD they scored and closed that gap. I thought 'Oh man," but then in the back of my mind I thought maybe we were going to make a play, and (Garrard) did. (Pittsburgh) would have deserved it in the end, but we wanted it a little bit more." Having seen a 28-10 fourth-quarter lead disappear, Jacksonville's defense came up with an absolutely necessary stop, forcing a Steelers punt with 2:50 to go and handing the ball back to Garrard with plenty of time and one timeout remaining, needing just a field goal with the score 29-28 Pittsburgh. Dennis Northcutt put the Jags in excellent position by returning the punt to the 49, but Jacksonville found itself in a 4th-and-2 situation with just under two minutes to go, having exhausted its final timeout on an unsuccessful challenge earlier in the drive. Garrard dropped back to pass, but didn't hesitate to scramble up the middle when a seam opened, picking up 32 yards and a huge first down in the process. The Jags then ran the clock down to 40 seconds, setting up Scobee in the middle of the field from 25 yards after Pittsburgh used up all three of its timeouts. Scobee's kick was true all the way, splitting the uprights with 37 ticks on the clock, and giving Jacksonville a 31-29 edge. Following Davenport's kick return, Roethlisberger eliminated any chance of a miracle final drive when he put the ball on the ground for his fourth turnover of the day. Jags defensive lineman Derek Landri scooped up the fumble with 20 seconds remaining, and Jacksonville had the win in hand. "He's a competitor," Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said of his quarterback, who has now thrown six interceptions in his last two postseason outings. "They're a bunch of competitors in that (locker) room. Competitive spirit is not an issue. The Jaguars are to be congratulated...I like the way we fight but we don't execute well enough early on. That's been a struggle of ours. And it cost us tonight." Landri also had an interception on the day, while Rashean Mathis picked Roethlisberger twice, with his first interception return - a 63-yard TD - giving the Jaguars their initial lead. Heath Miller had eight catches for 85 yards and a score, and Santonio Holmes also hauled in a touchdown pass for Pittsburgh, which was ultimately done in by a pair of decisions to try for two-point conversions following fourth- quarter touchdowns. Pittsburgh took the initial lead with a 10-play, 80-yard opening drive that elapsed nearly five minutes of clock and culminated in Davenport's one-yard touchdown plunge. Roethlisberger hit Ward for a 31-yard gain off a bootleg, moving the ball into Jacksonville territory, and Matt Spaeth's seven-yard catch eventually positioned the ball near the one and set up Davenport's score. But Jones-Drew took the ensuing kickoff 96 yards all the way to the Steelers one-yard line, and Taylor bulled his way into the end zone on the following play to tie the game, 7-7, with 9:39 on the clock. Both defenses stiffened, forcing a combined four straight punts before Roethlisberger's first turnover resulted in Jacksonville's go-ahead score. Pittsburgh's offense moved near midfield when Roethlisberger's 3rd-and-10 pass deflected off the hands of Miller and right to Ward, who turned it into a 33- yard gain. But two plays later, Mathis stepped in front of a Roethlisberger pass intended for Holmes, then raced virtually untouched down the sideline on his way to a 63-yard return for a score and a 14-7 Jaguars lead with 10:19 remaining in the half. Mathis came up with a second interception when Roethlisberger attempted to throw into double coverage on the ensuing Steelers possession, positioning Garrard and the offense at the Pittsburgh 46. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-7 from the 43, Garrard threw down the right sideline for a streaking Jones-Drew, who burst past the Pittsburgh secondary for a 43-yard touchdown and a 21-7 cushion that held up until the half. James Farrior intercepted Garrard on just the third play of the third quarter, setting up an eventual 28-yard field goal from Jeff Reed. But the Jags responded with a time-consuming scoring drive, moving 82 yards in eight plays and taking a commanding 28-10 lead when Jones-Drew busted off the left tackle for a 10-yard touchdown with 4:39 to play in the third. Roethlisberger then engineered a 10-play, 69-yard march, culminating in a 37- yard TD hookup with Holmes on the first snap of the fourth quarter. Holmes found a seam the middle of the Jacksonville secondary, then broke one tackle and scampered into the end zone to trim the lead to 28-17. A timely stand by the Steelers defensive unit allowed the Pittsburgh offense another scoring opportunity, and Roethlisberger completed the ensuing 10-play possession by hitting Miller down the seam for a 14-yard touchdown with 10:25 to go in the game. Pittsburgh elected to go for two, and appeared to have converted when Ward made a fabulous sliding catch in the corner of the end zone. But a holding call negated the reception, Roethlisberger was stopped short of the goal line after scrambling on the next play, and Jacksonville retained a 28-23 edge. On 2nd-and-15 from his own 19 following a costly holding penalty, Garrard was intercepted by Ike Taylor, who returned the pick to the Jacksonville 16. Roethlisberger rumbled for two yards on the ground, then hit Ward for a four- yard pickup to the Jaguars one. Two straight incompletions led to a 4th-and- goal, and Roethlisberger went back to Ward in the corner of the end zone on a fade route. Ward came nowhere near making the catch, but Jags corner Brian Williams was called for pass interference, giving Pittsburgh a fresh set of downs. One play later, Davenport nosed his way over the goal line to put the Steelers back on top, 29-28 with 6:21 to play, and the score remained that way after Roethlisberger misfired on the two-point conversion try. Garrard converted a key 3rd-and-13 by hitting Northcutt for 17 yards on the following series, but was sacked by LaMarr Woodley on 3rd-and-7 from the 39, forcing a Jaguars punt with just under four minutes remaining.Game Notes:Earnest Wilford and Reggie Williams had two catches apiece for Jacksonville, for 39 and 23 yards, respectively... The Jaguars had not allowed a touchdown on the opening drive of a game all season coming in...Pittsburgh was without leading rusher Willie Parker, as well as starters Marvel Smith and Aaron Smith, and return man Allen Rossum; Steelers safety Troy Polamalu did return after missing five games...Jacksonville defensive lineman John Henderson left during the game's opening drive with an apparent leg injury and did not return...Garrard threw two interceptions, just one fewer than he threw during the entire regular season.
