Get Ready For A Ton Of Award Shows ...

Hollywood Averaged Nearly One Ceremony A Day In 1999

LOS ANGELES, Posted 9:38 p.m. EST January 4, 2000 -- As Hollywood gears up for another back-slapping year, it turns out 1999 was an award bonanza with the entertainment industry handing out 3,182 trophies at 332 ceremonies. Emmy statue

Daily Variety counted everything from the Academy Awards to the Moxies, from the Golden Frogs to the Silver Sewers, and found show business averaged an awards event for nearly every day of the year.

On average, nine prizes a day were handed out, Variety reported Tuesday.

"There are even awards for the best awards: In September, the Oscar, Grammy and Tony Awards television shows all won Emmy Awards."

The tally included the full range of hardware handouts: The Tiger Film Awards, the Golden Rams, the Sparrows, the Bambi, the Crystal Awards, the Crystal Heart and the Czech Crystals.

There were the Razzies, the Webby Awards, the Guldbagge Awards, the Trumpet Awards and the Living the Dream Award.

The number of awards rises every year: In 1997, for example, there were only 3,138 trophies at 252 ceremonies.

Variety sarcastically suggested in a note to the industry: "There were 33 days last year when not a single award was handed out. Don't let this happen again. You may get an award for your efforts."
