The nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning.

The nominees for best picture are "The Artist," "The Descendants," "The Help," "Moneyball," "Hugo," "War Horse," "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," "The Tree of Life" and "Midnight in Paris."

The nominees for best actor are George Clooney “The Descendants," Brad Pitt for “Moneyball,” Jean Dujardin "The Artist," Demian Bichir “A Better Life," and Gary Oldman “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy."

The nominees for best director are Michel Hazanavicius “The Artist," Alexander Payne “The Descendants," Martin Scorsese “Hugo.” Woody Allen “Midnight in Paris," and Terrence Malick “The Tree of Life."

The nominees for best supporting actor are Christopher Plummer “Beginners," Nick Nolte “Warrior," Kenneth Branagh “My Week with Marilyn," Jonah Hill “Moneyball,” and Max von Sydow “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."

The nominees for best supporting actress are Melissa McCarthy “Bridesmaids," Jessica Chastain “The Help," Octavia Spencer “The Help," Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs and Berenice Bejo “The Artist."

The nominees for best adapted screenplay are “The Descendants,” “Hugo,” “The Ides of March,” “Moneyball” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”

The nominees for best original screenplay are “The Artist,” “Bridesmaids,” “Margin Call,” “Midnight in Paris” and “A Separation.”

The nominees for best animated feature are “A Cat in Paris,” “Chico & Rita,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Puss in Boots” and “Rango.”

The nominees for best foreign language film include "A Separation," "Footnote," "In Darkness," "Bullhead" and "Monsieur Lahzar."

The nominees for best documentary feature are "Pina," "Hell and Back Again," "If A Tree Falls: The Story of the Earth Liberation Front," "Paradise Lost 3" and "Undefeated."

The nominees for best cinematography are "The Artist," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Hugo," "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse."

The nominees for best original score are "The Adventures of Tintin," "The Artist," "Hugo," "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "War Horse."

The nominees for best original song include "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets," and "Real in Rio" from "Rio." 
The nominees for best editing are "The Artist," "The Descendants," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Hugo" and "Moneyball."

The nominees for best art direction include "The Artist," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Hugo," "Midnight in Paris" and "War Horse."

The nominees for best costume design are "Anonymous," "The Artist," "Hugo," "Jane Eyre" and "W.E."

The nominees for best makeup are "Albert Nobbs," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" and "The Iron Lady."

The nominees for best visual effects include "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," "Hugo," "Real Steel," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

The nominees for best sound mixing are "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Moneyball," "Hugo," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "War Horse."

The nominees for best sound editing are "Drive," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Hugo," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and "War Horse." 
The nominees for best animated short are "Dimanche/Sunday," "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore," "La Luna," "A Morning Stroll" and "Wild Life."
