2008 Indianapolis, IN -- (Sports Network) - Blake Hoffarber's amazing buzzer-beater lifted Minnesota past 22nd-ranked Indiana, 59-58, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse.Hoffarber scored only five points, but the last two came on an amazing effort that kept Minnesota's tourney run alive. Damian Johnson had 17 points and six rebounds for the sixth-seeded Golden Gophers (20-12), who advanced to play 10th-seeded Illinois in the semifinals on Saturday. Lawrence McKenzie finished with 15 points and five boards, while no other player scored more than seven points. "This certainly was a hard-fought game," Minnesota coach Tubby Smith said. "There was a lot of ebb and flow to it, and I thought we established a presence early in the game and I thought that we were able to survive the onslaught and survive without Spencer Tollackson and with our guys in foul trouble. I have to give it to Indiana. They did a super job of keeping the ball alive and getting the second and third shots there at the end. Again, I have a lot of faith in these young men and the way they played, and we're just grateful to get the win." D.J. White ended with 23 points, 13 boards and four blocks for the third- seeded Hoosiers (25-7), who have dropped two straight and three of four overall. Eric Gordon poured in 16 points and Jordan Crawford added nine in the loss. Minnesota led 57-52 with 2:06 left, but saw its advantage shrink to 57-55 after Gordon converted 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 45.9 seconds remaining. Following a Dan Coleman miss, Gordon was fouled with 3.4 seconds left. The rookie phenom missed the first free throw, meaning he had to intentionally shank the second attempt. White corralled the offensive board and nailed the putback, tying the score at 57. However, White was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw. A mad scramble ensued for the rebound and White was fouled again while trying to secure the ball with 1.5 seconds to go in regulation. White missed the first foul shot, but drained the second to give Indiana the lead. Coming out of a timeout, Minnesota needed a miracle and Hoffarber delivered, nailing a desperation shot as time expired. Hoffarber managed to grab the cross-court inbounds pass from Travis Busch, turn and throw the ball up with his left hand from just inside the three-point line before the buzzer sounded, shocking the Hoosiers. "I felt like it was good," Hoffarber said about his game-winning shot. "I was kind of fading to the corner so I couldn't really see that it was. It felt good, but I couldn't see if it was on target, and I saw it go through. I was in shock." The Golden Gophers came out strong, building a 19-5 lead before the contest had reached the eight-minute mark. Indiana slowly began to chip away at the deficit. Crawford's layup cut the margin to single digits, 24-15, with 6:23 remaining in the first half. Minnesota held a 34-27 lead at the break. "That was a disappointing way we started the basketball game, but I was proud of our team and the way we competed," Indiana coach Dan Dakich said. The Golden Gophers saw their seven-point halftime lead evaporate, as the Hoosiers opened the second half on a 7-0 run and grabbed their first lead, 40-39, after White made two free throws around the midway point of the frame. Game Notes Minnesota shot 33.9 percent from the field...Indiana made 32 percent of its shots...The Golden Gophers held a 42-36 edge on the boards...Despite the loss, Indiana owns an 88-64 edge over Minnesota in the all-time series.
