Jackson Hurt As Minnesota Downs Baltimore

POSTED: 10:58 pm CDT August 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Vikings' 23-15 preseason game victory over the Baltimore Ravens may have been a costly one, as quarterback Tarvaris Jackson injured his right knee late in the first quarter.

On the Vikings' second possession of the game, Jackson scrambled around the right side of the line when he was hit by Ravens linebacker Antwan Barnes on the leg and was brought down by Ray Lewis and Dawan Landry. The severity of the injury is not known but Jackson remained in the game for two plays before hobbling off and leaving the game for good.

The third-year signal-caller looked solid on the game's first drive, orchestrating an 11-play, 70-yard possession that resulted in a 23-yard touchdown pass to Martin Nance.

Jackson completed 7-of-11 passes for 82 yards and the score before being replaced by Gus Frerotte.

Minnesota (1-1) star running back Adrian Peterson got his first touches of the preseason, carrying the ball eight times for 30 yards while catching a 22-yard pass.

Former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith didn't impress in his start for Baltimore (1-1), completing 3-of-5 passes for 25 yards and an interception. His competition for the starting job, Kyle Boller, wasn't much better in tossing for 40 yards and a pick on 8-of-12 efficiency.

Ravens rookie running back Ray Rice looked impressive in getting the start in place of Willis McGahee, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee earlier this week. Rice, out of Rutgers, carried eight times for 77 yards, including a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

A pair of Steven Hauschka field goals in the second quarter was sandwiched between Frerotte's five-yard touchdown pass to Robert Ferguson, as the Vikings took a 20-7 lead at the break.

Hauschka's 48-yarder was the only score in the third quarter, and Derrick Martin accounted for the Ravens' only touchdown of the second half with a 22- yard interception return off a pass from rookie John David Booty three minutes into the final quarter.
