Minnesota Timberwolves 2009 Draft Preview

(Sports Network) - The Kevin McHale era in Minnesota is over.

New basketball chief David Kahn is now running things in the Land of 10,000 Lakes and hopes to build on a nucleus that includes one of the top power forwards in the game, Al Jefferson, and the emerging Kevin Love.

McHale stumbled on recent draft days, taking studs like Brandon Roy and O.J. Mayo and then dealing them. Coming into the draft, Kahn has three first round picks at his disposal and needs a natural point guard along with some frontcourt help for Jefferson, who is coming off an ACL injury, and Love.

It was pretty clear that Kahn was looking to move up. Rumors were swirling. in the days leading up to the draft about Minnesota sending the sixth overall pick and Love to Memphis for the second pick. In that scenario, the Wolves would taken UConn center Hasheem Thabeet. Another rumor had Minnesota making a strong play for Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, offering all three of its original first-round picks (Nos. 6, 18 and 28) to get it done.

Instead, Kahn worked a deal with Washington, trading guards Randy Foye and Mike Miller to the Wizards for the No. 5 overall pick and centers Etan Thomas and Oleksiy Pecherov along with forward Darius Songaila.

Now Minnesota has four first round picks for the time being with the intent of grabbing Rubio.

If the Wolves can't move again, they have the opportunity to remake their entire backcourt by taking Stephen Curry and Tyreke Evans. Evans has the bigger upside and Kahn is very comfortable with Curry, the best pure shooter in this year's draft.

Key Players under contract: F Al Jefferson; F Brian Cardinal; F Ryan Gomes; F Kevin Love; F Corey Brewer; F Mark Madsen; G Sebastian Telfair; C Etan Thomas; C Oleksiy Pecherov; F Darius Songaila.

Draft picks: 1st round (5th overall (reported trade); 6th overall, 18th overall, 28th overall), 2nd round (45th overall, 47th overall).
