Top Seeds Wozniacki, Cibulkova Advance In Bastad

POSTED: 1:05 pm CDT July 7, 2009

(Sports Network) - Top seeds Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia were among Tuesday's winners in first-round action at the inaugural Swedish Open.

The top-seeded Wozniacki cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson, while the second-seeded Cibulkova also eliminated a host country native in wild card Sandra Roma, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

Wozniacki already has two WTA Tour wins this year, having previously captured the titles in Ponte Vedra Beach and Eastbourne. She's also lost in finals at Memphis, Charleston and Madrid.

Cibulkova was a surprise semifinalist at the French Open earlier this year, losing to world No. 1 Dinara Safina.

Third-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy also advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over countrymate Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday, while fourth-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia was knocked off by Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

Other winners Tuesday included Russia's Maria Kirilenko and Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. Both defeated Ukrainian qualifiers, as Kirilenko earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over Irina Buryachok and Kvitova moved on when Julia Vakulenko retired in the second set with a right wrist injury.

Masa Zec Peskiric of Slovenia, Spain's Nuria Llogostera Vives, Germany's Angelique Kerber and Swedish wild card Ellen Allgurin were also winners on Tuesday.

This week's champion on the red clay will pocket $37,000.
