Thome Helps White Sox Slip Past Twins

POSTED: 11:45 pm CDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Jim Thome drove in four runs and Gordon Beckham went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, as the Chicago White Sox hung on for an 8-7 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the middle installment of a three-game set between these AL Central foes.

Brian Anderson went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the White Sox, who beat the Twins in Minnesota for the first time since July 30, 2008. Scott Podsednik and Paul Konerko each knocked in a run.

"It was a huge win for the team. We pulled it out and it was a big win. It was a big confidence boost for us to come back and win tonight," Beckham said.

Gavin Floyd (7-6) went 7 2/3 frames, allowing five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts to collect the win for Chicago. Bobby Jenks gave up two runs -- one earned -- in the ninth but was able to hold on for his 20th save of the year.

Joe Crede hit a three-run home run and a solo homer for the Twins, who won, 6-4, in the series opener on Friday. Jose Morales stroked a two-run single, while Joe Mauer drove in the other run in defeat.

"The main focus is to go out there and try to find a way to win a ballgame and unfortunately we weren't able to do that," Crede said.

Glen Perkins (4-5) lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout to take the loss.

Jenks, who recorded the final out in the eighth, stayed on to pitch the home half of the ninth for Chicago, which was leading 8-5. Michael Cuddyer singled, Crede reached on Beckham's fielding error, and pinch-hitter Brian Buscher was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. After pinch-hitter Morales stroked a two-run single to center, Denard Span grounded into a double play to end the game.

The White Sox drew first blood with a run in the first inning. Podsednik reached base on an infield single and Alexei Ramirez walked before Jermaine Dye moved the runners up a base with a fly out. Thome then hit an RBI groundout.

Chicago plated two more runs during its next at-bat to build a three-run lead. Jayson Nix and Beckham stroked back-to-back one-out singles. Anderson and Podsednik followed with an RBI double and an RBI groundout, respectively.

Anderson's RBI single in the top of the fourth made it a 4-0 game.

Meanwhile, Floyd retired the first nine Minnesota batters in order before giving up a single to Span in the bottom of the fourth. Floyd got Brendan Harris to line out and Mauer to hit into a double play to end the frame, though.

The White Sox chased Perkins from the tilt in the top of the fifth. Dye singled and Thome walked before Konerko stroked an RBI single to put Chicago ahead by five. R.A. Dickey took over on the hill and got A.J. Pierzynski to fly out and Nix to ground into a fielder's choice to prevent further damage.

The Twins finally got to Floyd in the home half of the fifth, plating three runs to cut the deficit to two. Crede drove in Justin Morneau and Jason Kubel, who both singled, when he blasted a Floyd offering into the seats in left field.

Chicago scored three times in the sixth, though, to build a five-run cushion. Dickey loaded the bases with two outs before Brian Duensing came on and gave up a three-run double to Thome.

Crede laced a two-out, solo home run in the seventh and Mauer hit an RBI groundout in the eighth to cut the gap to 8-5.

Game Notes

Prior to the game, the Twins inducted former right-handed pitcher and 1998 AL All-Star Brad Radke and the team's former farm and scouting director George Brophy into the team's Hall of Fame. Radke, who played his entire career in Minnesota (1995-2006), and Brophy became the 20th and 21st members of the Twins Hall of Fame...The White Sox lead the season series with the Twins, 5-3.
