Schnyder Wins Budapest Opener; Cornet Ousted

(Sports Network) - Top-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder was a first-round winner, while defending champion Alize Cornet came up a second- round loser Wednesday at the $220,000 GDF Suez Grand Prix tennis tournament.

Schnyder handled German Andrea Petkovic 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 on the red clay at Romai Tennis Academy. Schnyder's second-round opponent on Thursday will be Italian Maria Elena Camerin.

The French Cornet was drilled by Israeli Shahar Peer 6-2, 6-0 on Day 3. Cornet beat Slovenian Andreja Klepac in last year's finale here.

Another second-round upset came when Romanian Edina Gallovits took out third- seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, while sixth-seeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko avoided an upset by leveling Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Bondarenko will face Peer in the quarterfinals.

One other second-rounder saw Croatian qualifier Petra Martic maul Ukrainian Mariya Koryttseva 6-3, 6-2. Martic will meet Gallovits in the round of eight.

The 2009 Budapest champion will collect $37,000.
